The bronze cat sits enthroned at one of the most distinguished sites of
Saint-Petersburg, on the Malaya Sadovaya front of the beautiful Art
Nouveau Elisseeff Emporium--– the Elisseeff family, now living in
emigration, prefers this spelling instead of the phonetic Yeliseyev –,
which was built in 1903 on the Nevsky Prospekt and has maintained its
original function for more than a century. The tomcat is called Yelisey
after the house.
